As we get closer to July, we can’t help but feel excited about working with some of the best designers from Addis Ababa who will come to Germany for the Berlin Fashion Week as part of Fa254 and GIZ’s ADFT 2018 project. From exhibiting at the Green Show Room to mingling with international buyers and press, July will be a good month for the designers to grow their brands on an international level. While we contain our excitement for this forthcoming event, we have decided to take a moment and appreciate some of the fashion weeks on the African continent that are boosting Africa’s fashion industry. The following are some of the major fashion week events held in different locations across the continent.
1. Africa Fashion Week Nigeria
AFWN provides a platform for designers to expose their creations on a national and international level. but do not have great finances to do international shows. It is a social enterprise that assists in promoting Nigerian brands through worldwide visibility, distribution and manufacturing. The platform’s focus is on empowerment, creating jobs and supporting education and skill training in fashion.
Inspired by a bold, vibrant, and authentic African spirit and theme, AFI Cape Town Fashion Week celebrates the future of African luxury fashion with the power and confidence of the continent’s ancient creative heritage. AFI Cape Town Fashion Week is emerging as a luxurious destination for a fusion of fashion, art, and design and showcases a spectacular range of collections from African fashion royalty, and rising star designers and artists.
This event aims at displaying the beauty of African fashion and draws in a wide variety of guests who seek to view the textiles, designs such as the wove cotton and the wax print fabric. The fashion week now in its 8th year running, has previously attracted designers including Adama Paris, Anyango Mpinga, Naked Ape among many others.
Ugandan’s most influential fashion platform, Kampala Fashion Week promotes Ugandan designers and Fashion designers around the continent to a large global market. The organization was created to support and strengthen the design industry in Uganda as well as enhancing the cultural and creative talent that our country and continent has to offer.
Accra Fashion Week by Africa’s most popular fashion media FashionGHANA.com which has made a mark as the prime resource for fashion news and information not just for Ghana, but for the whole continent. With the launch of Accra Fashion Week African fashion designers, pioneers and creatives congregate to develop fashion on the continent.
The Dakar Fashion week has been happening for 16 years and was founded by Senegalese designer Adama Paris. The event highlights young Senegalese designers on an international level by providing a bridge between Senegal and the global fashion industry.
7. Lagos Fashion & Design Week
Lagos Fashion Week is a multi-day fashion event platform that aims to drive the Nigerian and ultimately, the African fashion industry; by bringing together buyers, consumers, and the media to view the current collections of African designers in the fashion capital of Lagos, Nigeria. As a leading fashion event on the African fashion calendar, LFW leads the way with initiatives that support, strengthens, and develop the fashion industry.
