Savage X Fenty Show is an American television special about the annual fashion show for Rihanna’s lingerie brand Savage X Fenty. Volume 1 premiered on 20 September 2019 and Volume 2 on 2 October 2020. The show has received a lot of praise from the audiences for many different reasons. Not mentioning the fact that the models, performers, and dancers bring the bewitching show to the screens, the show promotes diversity in the industry.
As mentioned by critiques, “Rihanna’s brand, from her beauty empire to apparel businesses, is known for inclusivity which is something that has created envy throughout the fashion world.” In fact, just several weeks ago, the brand hired the first little person as an ambassador for lingerie. The fact that the show and the brand promote all of the sizes, colors, genders, etc… is why it became so popular in the masses. It changes the way people view fashion while empowering individuals all around the world.
Let’s just say, when the fashion show includes the likes of Paris Hilton, Willow Smith, and Lizzo, as well as Drag Race royalty Shea Couleé, Jaida Essence Hall, and Gigi Good, Demi Moore, Bella Hadid, Cara Delevingne, Normani, and etc., it empowers the diversity. The audience does not sit in front of the TV while worrying about the extra calories they consumed. They see that every size is beautiful in its own way, and there is no one ratio by which you should measure yourself. The models in the show are showing so much confidence, and love towards their selves, and their bodies, that it is hard not to feel empowered after viewing it. And it does not only touch the topic of different body sizes but also shows the beauty of every type of individual. Males, females, non-binary, inclusive people; the list goes on and on, and that is why this show is changing the narrative and the way we view fashion.
If previously there was one standard by which we measured who should be on a runaway, now the possibilities are endless; everyone has a chance to show off their unique personality while shining with confidence. And in my opinion, this is what fashion is really about. It is not about what size you are, how you look, what is your sexuality or skin color, or how much your clothes cost; it is about the confidence with which you wear and present your style and your unique self. That is what this show is promoting, and this is why it has become so popular while getting positive reviews from critiques.
As mentioned by the article on Buzzfeed, “The show was an empowering masterpiece that encouraged watchers to take ownership of their body and harness their sexuality. Simply put, it was uniquely incredible”, And I could not agree with this statement more. The show empowers everyone around the globe and tells them that even if they do not fit the absurd “Standards” set by previous generations, the times are changing and are becoming more diverse. That is why the show is absolutely revolutionary, it changes the narrative of the fashion industry and makes it become more diverse and inclusive while encouraging us, everyday individuals to be more open-minded and kind to ourselves.
