AFIA: Sustainable Fashion From Ghana & Los Angeles

Despite the fashion industry’s notoriety for wasteful production that causes a lot of harm to the environment, its infamous dangerous working conditions and low wages for employees, there is a growing trend for more ethical and sustainable approaches to fashion. Sustainable fashion also called eco fashion, is a part of the growing design philosophy and trend of sustainability, the goal of which is to create a system which can be supported indefinitely in terms of human impact on the environment and social responsibility. It can be seen as an alternative trend against fast fashion. One of the brands making headlines in sustainable fashion is AFIA an award-winning clothing line for women produced entirely in Ghana.

Described as a fusion of worlds-borderless, nationless, raw, and representative of the natural intimacy between women, AFIA embodies a universal and multicultural identity. In process, Afia moves between time, space, and culture with consistency and integrity. The brand’s fabrics are sourced in Ghana, and the garments are sewn in Ghana by a women’s collective and in Downtown Los Angeles. The collections are made with cotton-wax prints from Ghana with a very short lifespan in the marketplace, resulting in forever limited-edition pieces of unique fabric. The colour, patterns, and motifs used in West African textiles are often visual representations of history, proverbs, moral values, and social codes.

Founded by Meghan Seboldin, the brand seeks to create beauty and to challenge cultural projections and social norms in an effort to propel evolution and enhance this life.
